Cotton shows up everywhere in apparel, from basic T-shirts and oversized hoodies to denim, dresses, underwear, pajamas, and children's clothing. But saying a garment is "made from cotton" tells you only part of the story.


A lightweight cotton jersey and heavyweight cotton canvas may come from the same natural fiber, yet the look, feel, drape, and performance can differ completely. Fiber length, yarn quality, fabric construction, weight, finishing, and blends all influence the final material.


For clothing brands, these differences matter. The wrong cotton fabric can shrink excessively, lose its shape, feel too heavy, or simply fail to support the intended design.

What Is Cotton Fabric?

Cotton is a natural plant-based fiber that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant. These soft fibers are harvested, separated from the seeds, cleaned, spun into yarn, and then knitted or woven to create cotton fabric.


Unlike polyester or nylon, cotton is not manufactured from synthetic polymers. Mature cotton fibers are primarily made from cellulose, the natural structural material found in plants.


So, what are cotton fibres?


They are individual elongated cells that develop on the surface of cotton seeds. Once mature and dried, the fibers naturally twist, which helps them hold together during spinning and makes it possible to turn loose cotton into yarn.


This yarn can then become anything from fine shirting to thick denim depending on how it is spun and how the fabric is constructed.

Where Does Cotton Come From?

Cotton comes from plants in the Gossypium genus and grows best in warm climates.


After flowering, the plant develops seed-containing structures called bolls. As the boll matures and opens, the familiar white cotton fibers become visible around the seeds. The crop is then harvested and sent for ginning, where the usable fibers — called lint — are separated from the seeds and cleaned.


Cotton is grown across several major textile-producing regions. China, India, Brazil, the United States, Pakistan, Australia, and Turkey are among important cotton-producing countries. For apparel brands, where cotton is grown can matter, but country of origin alone does not determine fabric quality. How Is Cotton Fabric Made?


Once raw cotton leaves the farm, several processing stages turn it into usable cloth material. The basic process includes:


  • Ginning: Cotton fibers are separated from the seeds and cleaned.

  • Carding: Fibers are opened, cleaned further, and arranged into a more consistent strand.

  • Combing when required: Shorter fibers and impurities are removed to create smoother, more uniform yarn.

  • Spinning: Cotton fibers are twisted together into yarn.

  • Knitting or weaving: The yarn is converted into cotton fabric.

  • Dyeing and finishing: The material receives its color, hand feel, dimensional control, or other desired characteristics.


This is why two products labeled "100% cotton" can feel noticeably different. The quality of the raw fiber is only one part of the finished fabric.

Cotton remains popular because it combines comfort with considerable design versatility.


Some of its most important properties include:


Softness: Cotton generally feels comfortable against the skin, making it useful for garments worn for long periods or directly against the body.


Breathability: Cotton fabrics can allow good airflow, although actual breathability also depends on fabric weight and construction. A lightweight cotton voile will naturally feel much airier than heavy cotton denim.


Absorbency: Cotton readily absorbs moisture. This is useful for everyday comfort, but it also means untreated cotton may stay damp longer during intense exercise than fabrics engineered for quick drying. Upland Cotton

Pima Cotton

Supima Cotton

Supima® is a trademark for American-grown extra-long-staple cotton. Its longer fibers can contribute to softness, strength, and better color retention in finished textiles.


Egyptian Cotton


"Egyptian cotton" describes cotton grown in Egypt rather than guaranteeing one particular fiber grade. Egyptian cotton can vary in quality, so brands should still confirm staple length and fabric specifications instead of relying only on the name.

Organic Cotton


Organic cotton refers primarily to how the crop is grown and certified rather than a separate cotton species.


Popular Types of Cotton Fabric

The same cotton fiber can be turned into many different fabrics. For clothing brands, the fabric construction is often more important than simply knowing that cotton is present.


Some popular types of cotton fabric include:


  • Cotton Jersey: Soft, knitted, and naturally flexible because of its looped construction. Common for T-shirts, casual dresses, tops, and loungewear.

  • Cotton Rib: A stretchy knit with visible vertical ribs. Frequently used for fitted tops, tanks, cuffs, neckbands, and trims.

  • Cotton French Terry: Smooth on the outside with loops on the reverse side. Popular material for hoodies, sweatshirts, joggers, and casual sets.

  • Cotton Fleece: Often brushed on the inside to create a soft, warmer surface. It works well for sweatshirts, sweatpants, and cold-weather casualwear.

  • Cotton Poplin: A smooth, tightly woven fabric typically used for shirts, blouses, dresses, and lightweight structured pieces.

  • Cotton Twill: Recognizable by its diagonal weave. It offers more structure and is commonly used for chinos, trousers, jackets, and workwear.

  • Cotton Denim: A durable twill fabric traditionally used for jeans, jackets, skirts, and other structured apparel.

  • Cotton Canvas: Heavier and more rigid than many apparel cottons. It works well for jackets, workwear, bags, and utility-style garments.

  • Cotton Voile: Lightweight, fine, and airy, making it suitable for summer dresses, blouses, linings, and relaxed warm-weather pieces.


Why Is Cotton Blended With Other Fibers?

Not every garment needs 100% cotton.


Blending cotton with another fiber can address performance limitations or create a particular feel.


Cotton-polyester combines cotton's familiar softness with polyester's dimensional stability, quicker drying, and wrinkle resistance. It is common in T-shirts, hoodies, uniforms, and everyday apparel.


Cotton-spandex adds stretch and recovery, making it useful for fitted T-shirts, dresses, pants, underwear, and other close-fitting garments.


Cotton-rayon blends can create a softer hand feel and more fluid drape, while tri-blends combining cotton, polyester, and rayon are popular for lightweight, soft casualwear.


The best blend depends on what you want the garment to do.

Common Uses of Cotton Fabric in Apparel

Cotton textiles can be engineered for very different clothing categories.

T-Shirts and Basics: Cotton jersey is one of the most familiar choices for everyday tees because it offers softness, comfort, and good printability. Premium collections may use combed, ring-spun, or longer-staple cotton yarns for a smoother feel.


Hoodies and Sweatshirts: Cotton-rich French terry and fleece provide more weight and structure. The right GSM and finishing determine whether the garment feels lightweight, everyday, or heavyweight and premium.


Denim and Bottomwear: Cotton twill and denim offer the structure needed for jeans, chinos, jackets, and utility pieces. Spandex may be added when additional movement is required.


Dresses, Shirts, and Summer Apparel: Poplin, voile, lightweight jersey, and other cotton constructions can provide breathability and comfort while giving designers different levels of drape and structure.

How Should Clothing Brands Choose Cotton Fabric?

Choosing cotton should start with the garment type —not simply with the decision to use a natural fiber.


Ask yourself what the finished product needs in terms of weight, drape, stretch, structure, softness, durability, and seasonality.


A premium oversized T-shirt might need heavyweight cotton jersey with a firm hand and good dimensional stability. A fitted women's tee may work better in lighter cotton-spandex jersey. A structured jacket could require cotton twill or canvas instead.


Before production, brands should also review:


  • Fiber composition and cotton variety

  • GSM (Grams per Square Meter) or fabric weight

  • Knit or weave construction

  • Stretch and recovery

  • Shrinkage after washing

  • Colorfastness

  • Pilling and abrasion

  • Fabric skew or twisting

  • Hand feel after laundering

  • Print or embroidery compatibility


Is Cotton a Sustainable Fabric?

Cotton is renewable and plant-based, but that does not automatically make every cotton product equally sustainable.


Its environmental impact depends on farming practices, water conditions, chemicals, energy use, processing, garment durability, and what happens to the product after use.


Brands interested in lower-impact sourcing should look beyond broad "natural" claims and evaluate certifications, traceability, recycled or organic options, mill practices, and product longevity.

Cotton fabric is popular because one natural fiber can be turned into an enormous range of materials — from soft jersey and airy voile to rugged canvas and heavyweight denim.
